NON-SURGICAL
PERIODONTAL THERAPY
Scaling is the removal of plaque, calculus
(calcified tartar) and bacteria
from the root surface of the teeth and above the gumline. It
is accomplished with manual instruments, as well as with
ultrasonic machines. Root planing is smoothing off
the rough surfaces on the roots of the teeth after
scaling.
Scaling and root planing are usually done in conjunction
with one another, and often use local
anesthesia for patient comfort. Scaling and root planing
is often referred to as a more extensive
“deep cleaning”.
Furthermore, these procedures also can be done with the
addition of localized, specially formulated antibiotics
which are placed between the gums and the root surfaces
of the teeth.
