DENTAL IMPLANTS
A
dental implant is an artificial tooth root (made
of a synthetic material) that is surgically
anchored into the jawbone (under the gum tissue)
in order to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place.
The advantage of using implants is that they do not depend
on neighboring teeth for support and they are permanent.
Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or
multiple teeth, to support permanently cemented crowns or
bridges, which eliminates the need for a denture. Additionally,
implants can be used to stabilize a denture. After
the surgical process, the implants are allowed to heal generally
between 2 to 6 months
prior to having the restoration.
